Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a report from the government by 15 days pertaining to actions taken regarding obscene and objectionable material in media and derogatory content in Youtube. A two-member bench of Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Qazi Faiz Isa resumed the hearing of identical petitions in the matter.

During the course of proceedings, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority representative informed the bench that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has set up a complaint cell of 25 persons to examine objectionable material in the Youtube. The bench was also apprised that complaints are being addressed immediately as the cell blocks objectionable content of Youtube.

Submitting a report, the Pemra representative said that a total of 49,899 websites of objectionable material, 10,000 websites containing derogatory content, 10,000 proxy websites and 6,000 social media sites have been blocked so far. The court was further informed that only http websites could not be blocked whereas Director General of the PTA Nisar Ahmad said that the Authority would have control over objectionable material in Youtube through a local domain.

Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan observed nobody is against the facility of the Youtube, saying in order to protect young generation from vulgarity it is important to block derogatory and objectionable material on the website.The court asked the PTA and the PEMRA to submit a report about actions to address obscene and objectionable material in media and derogatory content in Youtube by 15 days.
